The Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles will host the Hydro-Québec regional Science Fair finals in March 2015

Gaspé, September 29, 2014. – The Gaspé Campus of the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles, in association with the Conseil du loisir scientifique de l’Est du Québec (CLSEQ), will host the Hydro-Québec regional Science Fair finals in March 2015, an event that hasn’t been held at the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles for more than 20 years. Polyvalente Antoine-Bernard in Carleton-sur-Mer hosted it in 2003.

For campus director, Yolaine Arseneau, hosting the regional finals is a logical continuation to the science activities organised by the institution recently, “over the course of the past few years, our science teachers have sought to transmit their passion for this field to students in the region by visiting them at their schools. So, we are very enthusiastic about hosting the regional science fair”.

As a result of the activities coordinated by the Centre des sciences de la Gaspésie, affiliated with the Cégep de la Gaspésie et des Îles, more than 10,000 young people have gained awareness about science. This year, the Centre des sciences is taking a temporary break to let the regional finals, a major project, hold centre stage. “We will again visit the schools in the area, but this year, we’ll be encouraging students to participate in the science fair and helping them set up their projects”, pointed out Luc Bélanger, science teacher and member of the local committee.

Long absent from the Gaspé, the regional finals will be an opportunity not only to inspire enthusiasm for science in our schools but also to encourage participation in the science fair. “We expect some 150 young scientists to take part in this event to which we hope to add a unique Gaspé Peninsula flair”, indicated the local committee coordinator, Gaëlle Chavignot. The event will also feature activities to entertain both the students and their accompanying teachers. “They will remember their experience at our campus”, concluded Chavignot.

The Gaspé Campus is investing considerable resources to make sure the event is a success: a committee has been set up, teachers and staff members will be invited to help, and rooms and material will be prepared. The contributions of all these individuals, financial partners and the Conseil de loisir scientifique de l’Est du Québec are essential to meeting the challenge.

About the Science Fair

The Science Fair is a province-wide science competition open to students from 6 to 20 years of age. It is one of the most interesting ways to build an interest in science as students organise a project involving a scientific experiment, design or study. Participants will have the opportunity to present their projects to the public, fellow students and their scientific colleagues.
