John Abbott Engineering Teacher Awarded a Federal Research Grant
Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue - September 18, 2015 - Seeing a new passion in the eyes of a college student when a research project is presented is undoubtedly a rare and rewarding reaction for a teacher. This is particularly true for 3 teachers at John Abbott College working with students and industry experts on the cutting edge of knowledge and innovation.
A mere 9 months ago, Physics teacher Nathaniel Lasry, PhD, was awarded an Applied and Development Grant entitled “Asynchronous Peer Instruction e-learning Platform”.
Six months later, Physics teacher Johnathan Guillemette, PhD, received an Engage grant for his project titled: “Improving Data Collection in Sports Analytics”.
What do these 3 very different research projects have in common? The grants were all awarded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) whose mission is “to foster the discovery and application of knowledge”. Long the domain of university campuses, NSERC recognizes that “this training contributes to the availability of a highly skilled labour force, capable of thinking critically and creating and applying knowledge for the benefit of Canada.”
Young men and women at John Abbott College are gaining real life experience working on these projects with their teachers and an industry partner, an important criterion for these grants. The 3-way collaboration creates a winning formula for all parties involved as partnering companies benefit from the expertise of the John Abbott College teachers in an area of research and development the Canadian company may need to prosper but may not be able to afford due to manpower or budgetary constraints. The student garners invaluable experience in a very technical field, potentially opening doors upon graduation that he/she was not aware of previously.
